Art with Mood

This photo (above) caught my eye as I wandered through the Architectural Digest website the other day, and I’ve been a little bit obsessed with it ever since. I think my love of good art (good? I guess art appreciation is inherently subjective but I think most of us think we can recognise ‘good’ from ‘bad’) was instilled in me early by my artist mum; our house when I was growing up was always full of paintings and sculpture by mum and by other artists, some of which I’m lucky enough to now have in my home. When we visited other countries the first stop was always the galleries (and the churches). And now, the two things I could happily spend my last pennies on are paintings and real estate (and perhaps one day I will have some pennies to indulge in these things!). The thing that strikes me about the paintings above are that they are all abstracts, and all in the same warm greys and neutral tones. I love the shades of grey in the furnishings and the paint of the bookshelves (and the men’s clothing). This collection and the whole arrangement has really inspired me to start something similar.

 

Also on the topic of beautiful artwork paired with shades of grey and warm neutrals, this hallway is one of my favourites. That wall colour is my all-time fave colour, and a dark grey hallway filled with books and amazing artwork is truly a version of Heaven for me :)

On my mind this Saturday are..

I am itching to change something in my house today. Move something around, paint something, buy something new, re-hang, re-cover, re-locate and generally mix things up. This feeling does take hold every now and then and I can’t rest until I do something to get it out of the system. And sometimes changing the cushions just won’t do the trick.

There are a few things on my mind that aren’t helping matters. Let me show you.

First, there’s this room:

One of my favourite living rooms ever. And I want mine to be more like it. The colours, the mix of styles and shapes and pattern, I just love it. And I really want (I know I sound like a broken record on this point) to introduce more colour on the walls, and I’ve been thinking for awhile now that either pale blue, grey-purple or a dusky pink like this would be perfect (not consulted husband yet).

Then, there’s this:

 

I saw this block printed cotton over at Full House earlier this week and I can’t stop thinking about it, and how much I love that long sofa pillow on the turquoise french bench. Every since I’ve been scouring ebay to find a similar sofa and etsy to find a similar fabric. It’s only a matter of time!

Also, this:

has me thinking about modern art and retro furniture, and finding a cool vintage chair to recover in pink leather!

Then, I’m also thinking about whether I have room to order a new Madeline Weinrib rug, because I really, really like this:

I wonder where you can buy elephant consoles like this one?

My pink/turquoise/aqua room!

Isn’t this bathroom amazing? Every detail is gorgeous, from the mirrored sink cabinet, to the grey granite top, stone sink, sconces and venetian mirror above. But the real showstopper, of course, is the pink and aqua pattern on the walls! Not sure if it’s a painted finish or a wallpaper, but I love the colours. It reminds me of this Kate Spade ad that I’ve had saved for awhile for colour inspiration - I also love the vintage feel of it:

And while I’m in the mood for it, why not add in a turquoise rug;

Friday teals

Yes, I am still on my blue and green - or here, blue and teal- kick! I just can’t stop thinking about these colours. Though it probably doesn’t help that today I’ve been working on a room that features lots of teal! I’ve also mentioned it before, but I also adore abstract art paired with antiques and traditional furniture, so this room (above) really appeals. This might be one to try at home! And yes, I know I still haven’t been brave enough to share my diy abstract art! I’ll get there.

Speaking of bravery, I always admire people who paint every room in their houses a different bold but beautiful colour. I dream about this sort of thing but have always had resale in my mind in every house we’ve had, so have never given it a try. I love this approach in older homes where there are lots of smaller spaces leading into one another, rather than a big open-plan room.

I’m drawn to rooms like this one because they demonstrate how effectively you can decorate on a budget- not that I know that this room was done on a budget, but you could replicate this easily at home. The wall colour matching the rug gives instant co-ordination. White sofas are the chameleon of decorating (I need one)- you can change the entire look but keep the same sofa! Then choose an accent colour - here it’s yellow - and paint a pair of vintage mirrors and a pair of cane chairs off ebay and voila! Just add in some accessories and your stylish room is complete. I love this stuff.

And finally, a dose of teal chinoiserie just because that’s my obsession at the moment..
