Saturday House of Inspiration - Sally Steponkus

I have been a big fan of Washington D.C. Interior decorator ever since I saw this lovely neutral wallpapered entry:

The neutral palette is soothing and classic, yet the geometric pattern and the bamboo bench keep the look modern. The shapely mirror looks great against that wallpaper!

Then I realised that I’d seen her work before, in Domino:

There’s those chairs again!

I really like the way she uses a lot of colour but that her aesthetic remains classic. He looks are always co-ordinated well but not matchy-matchy. This week I am inspired by her home:

The gold bamboo-framed mirrors she has (above and below) in her apartment are gorgeous! I also love the purple vase and aqua lamp against the otherwise neutral entry area (below):

An ordinary kitchen is really transformed with a little bit of geometric wallpaper in a fresh green colour (above). You could put clear glass over the lower section to act as a splashback.

I hadn’t seen this picture of Sally’s bedroom when I did my post on my own octagonal mirror dilemma! It looks great flanked by twin green ceramic lamps with a ribbon trim.

[As a sidenote, we used these exact lamps below - never sure whether they are artichoke or acorns! - lamps in my wonderful friend Carolyn's master bedroom, but with a white shade trimmed with green. We used a pistachio green and raspberry colour scheme and it looks amazing! Carolyn is building a new home and I get to decorate it yay! I'll be sure to post pics of that exciting project as it develops!]

My new foo

Is it somewhat ironic that the day after I post about seeing the same thing over and over again in the design world (see yesterday’s post), that I stumble across and buy what is surely one of the most recognisable decorating items around today: chinese foo dogs.

I’ve seen red ones and white ones but the turquoise dogs are the ones we see all over the design blog-world. They always look great, though. The ones I bought today were ridiculously cheap because of some small repair work on one of the paws- though you only notice it up close:

Talk about a pop of colour (above)! The foo dogs provide just enough of the turquoise to accent against the orange.

Okay, so there’s no actual foo dogs in this room (above), but the same turquoise ceramic in the horse and figurine give a similar effect.

A little bit of Regency Style

I am in the process of ordering these chairs for a client:

I love faux-bamboo chairs (and real bamboo chairs!), but of course we have all seen them before. And it got me thinking about a recent post on Little Green Notebook about being overexposed to some elements in design. The question was whether, by seeing - and from the point of view of decorators, using - the same pieces over and over again, do those design elements become cliche? Should you not do something because it’s been done before? And should design bloggers aim to only post things that nobody has yet seen?

My feeling is that something- a piece of furniture or a fabric for example - that we consider beautiful doesn’t become less so just because someone else has it or because it’s ‘been done’. You like the things you like, irrespective of how many other people like the same thing. For my part, starting this blog was motivated by a simple desire to document the things that I like in interiors and houses, to put ‘onto paper’ my current decoration musings, and to record things I might be doing in my home or in my work. I certainly have no pretentions to being a design groundbreaker!

(How gorgeous is that purple rug (above)? The way the colour is picked up in the vases, tulips and artwork is so beautiful).

All of this got me thinking about how Hollywood Regency style- and often faux-bamboo chairs - is everywhere you look these days. Does that make it any less gorgeous? No way!

A little bit regency, a little bit retro (above). Brown, white and green works, but those pink vases make this space great.

Black and navy beach house

Here’s how to achieve beach-style chic without sticking to the neutrals/white with hints of blue formula. I love the dark wall colours and the way all the white woodwork pops against it. That grey seascape photo (below) is so beautiful, I want one just like it! The shelves around and over the small sofa is a great use of a small space.

I love this as an idea for wall storage and display where you have no space for deep shelves. Here some ceiling cornicing has been painted stark white and mounted on the wall. It continues the look of the shelving around the room and though it’s not deep enough to store books, it’s perfect for pictures and displaying small items.

The grasscloth wallpaper (below) adds texture and a natural element which continues the beach theme.

Another use of a tiny space that would otherwise be wasted (below): this very shallow shelf gives the look of a cabinet and is perfect for glass bottles.
