My morning and some decorating bargains

I had to pop into Spotlight this morning to pick up some bits and pieces for client room installations next week, but actually saw a few bargain treasures that I wouldn’t mind for myself (as often happens, I must admit). If you have the patience to sift through lots of ugly vases, artificial (and artificial looking) flowers, floral bedspreads and acrylic rugs you can occasionally find something great (and cheap). Case in point, the blue and white trellis and geometric cushions (above). I was very tempted to buy some of these (especially the top one), and I think they were only around $30.

This combination of greens and white also caught my eye (after a bit of searching behind the lime greens!).

Or, for a more ‘country’ look, you could throw in a green toile and bring out the beige piping.

But at the end of the day I am a classics kind of girl, so these are some of the blue/white/neutral (boring? No! beautiful!) haul that I couldn’t resist for my house (above)..

They also sometimes have some nice fabrics..check out these red and blue geometric-printed hessians (above).

There was also this European-text cotton dhurrie rug (above), which could be pretty great in the right room.

Some more of the treasures I came away with (above) - they had all these goreous quilted pillowcases and euro cases reduced to $10 (usually something like $50) so I stocked up on white and taupe. And the glass vases and hurricanes were all half price! So I figured a few more to add to the collection couldn’t hurt..

After Spotlight I stopped at Freedom to look for candles for my new hurricanes (no luck, such a limited range!), and saw this extra-long rustic chest of drawers- might be perfect for the kitchen in my new country weekender I thought!!

Freedom seems to be trying to cater to the slightly industrial take on country style at the moment, and I quite liked this iron and glass pendant light.

This weekend between birthday parties I would like to try to get out of town to look at some properties - anyone know of a beautiful-but-rundown-ancient country house up for sale??

A snippet of my week and a lovely bedroom

Phew! It’s been a busy couple of days, choosing external paint colours for a client’s house, moving furniture in and out and styling another property that’s about to be put on the market, and chasing up furniture, fabrics and wallpapers for various other projects. My client and I have also been finalising lighting, paint and other finishes (and thinking ahead of course to furniture!) for a major renovation project that I’m working on, which currently looks like this (it’s going to be amazing when it’s finished):

..and dragging around my sick 6 year-old through most of it. It’s been one of those weeks! Challenging, but still fun.

On another note, I’m loving this simple but gorgeous dark brown and white bedroom. The geometric carpet and pillows really shine against the whites and the dark walls. Love those lamps too!

What is it about hexagons?

Yes, geometrics are everywhere are the moment. But I see hexagon pattern as a classic, not just a fad that we’ll all get sick of. And, of course, hexagon pattern is nothing new (think bee-hives!); I love traditional terracotta tiles just as much as punchy hexagon rugs and wallpaper - and maybe more, when I see examples as beautiful as this:

Don’t hexagons work well as flooring? These tiles (above) are like an up-scaled version of old-fashioned small hexagon tiles (see the floor in the lonny pic at the top of this post?). It’s a modern design but the rest of the bathroom is so classic, like the subtly striped walls. I LOVE the mirrored cupboards and the way the tiles continue into the shower recess.

Again, stripes work well in the upholstery here (above) with the hexagon-patterned rug to make the overall look more classic. Or rather, an otherwise classic-style room is made fun and modern through the addition of the rug!

Some hexagon patterns from my fabric samples (above in a terrible and slightly blurry pic, sorry). These are the ‘neutrals’ but they come in lots of colourways - I haven’t had an opportunity to use the white and silver pattern yet, but I want to!

I saw this amazing hexagon-filled stairwell in one of my new design books - Jonathan Adler’s ‘Happy Chic Colors’. Love the colours and it does make a very narrow stairwell interesting!
