A little shopping

I stopped into Coco Republic this week to do a little shopping for clients, though whenever I shop for clients I invariably find some things I’d like for myself too. This bedroom display was an example, as I can’t seem to go past blue and white! Love the buttoned bed and the chinoiserie- inspired fabrics.

Another blue and white room, with some very cute ikat-covered timber stools.

These blue/green jars caught my eye for a room I am working on at the moment in these colours. I really liked the scallop pattern and the colour of the jar on the right, but not the $500 price tag!

But I did find these rattan and cane chairs for a client’s outdoor room- these are discontinued so on sale- gotta love that! I’m going to ditch the back cushion so you can see the great rattan chair back and use a lower lumbar cushion instead.

I really liked this Ralph Lauren brass coffee table, which was also on sale.

Loved the warm colours and the plaid pattern on this winged bedroom chair.

Here’s the bedroom set-up to accompany the chair. Can you imagine these rusts and dark greens in your winter hunting lodge? So can I.

Really liked these brass and black marble side tables. I’ve seen this table in a smaller version but this one is big enough for a lamp and is very sturdy.

I absolutely loved this aqua and brown chinoiserie armchair. It would be such a great starting piece to base a room around in this colour scheme.

And what do you know, some matching cushions!

Fabulous moss-green velvet dining chairs with nickel studs.

The green velvet chairs paired with these palm leaf artworks created a real ‘Plantation-chic’ vibe which would look so great on the coast or in Queensland!

There’s nothing like a ceramic lamp to bring a shot of colour- loved this Ralph Lauren green version (above).

This photo doesn’t show the colours too well, but I do like navy and white paired with a fresh shade of green.

Have a great weekend, as we look forward to racing fever here in Melbourne next week!

It’s all about stripes and blue and white

I’m still thinking about that apartment I missed out on, and how I would have decorated it. (I’m aware this is a pretty fruitless activity but this is just what I do - I have fun planning layouts and room schemes - and whether it will ever be put into practice is completely immaterial!) Lots of blue and white and really pale floors - I’m thinking bleached timber and sisal, but I also love the subtle leopard-print carpet above. My storage shed is full of pairs of French chairs - another hobby - and a pair painted chalky white and recovered in stripes on either side of an antique commode would have been great for the little entryway!

Tangerine or shades of citrus yellow work so well as an accent to blue and white. But the thing that makes this room work is the layering; throws, trays, books, ornaments, cushions - it’s all about the accessories!

I love this moody hallway (above) because it shows how key lighting is when you don’t have any natural light. Picture and wall lights are usually so much nicer in classic spaces than downlights, and the lighting in the two rooms at the end of the hallway really draws you in. Plus I’m just such a fan of club-like dark timber panelling and walls covered in pictures.

These pics (above and below) are from a Ralph Lauren showroom - lots of lovely blue and white, some dark walls and lots of texture in wicker baskets and furniture.

When I think of that apartment I think along the lines of this style (above and below). Pale flooring and white paintwork as a foil for blue and white fabrics and ceramics.

I think these rooms come from Australian magazine ‘Country Homes’. This is a warmer, more ‘country house’ take on the colour scheme; Creams and neutrals dominate instead of pure white. I just adore dark blue/grey walls covered in artwork, and the balcony off the bedroom overlooking trees.

Full Circle

Posted in house hunting

Hello there. Remember me? It’s been awhile - quite a long while - since I last posted here but I’m happy to be back in the blog world. I never really intended on taking such a lot of time off, but for the past few weeks my energies have been utilized elsewhere and my daily blog ritual slipped down on my long list of priorities. Blogging became a bit like exercising - I felt good doing it but I was sick of making the time in my day, so I stopped until I was desperate to get back into it for the sake of my mental health! There has been so much happening and so many ideas fighting for space in my head that I need the catharsis that is this little blog.

Can I just say thank you so much to the many readers who emailed me wondering if I was still alive? It’s always slightly surprising to me to be made aware of the fact that there are people who read what I write here - and it is so, so encouraging to hear from people who share my interests, style and passions (obsessions?).

I won’t go into great detail about what I’ve been up to since I last posted (work, kids, more work, house-hunting - you get the picture), but one consistent theme for me has been dreaming of a place in the country, and figuring out how that can actually become a reality for us.

Would we keep our house in Melbourne and just buy a little weekender? If so it would need to be cheap. Or do we see our lives as ever being based more outside the city? This would mean at some stage possibly uprooting the children from their school but it would also mean I could start looking at bigger houses, more character, more land… But we’d still need a small base in the city, mainly for my work purposes. It was in this mindset that I looked at - and loved - an inner city apartment recently.

Yes, it was pretty ugly. Blue carpet, very small and crusty kitchen, bathrooms all in need of replacing, but boy, could I see the potential! It also had a fireplace, french doors, soaring ceilings, an office for me and you could walk to the cbd.

I had it all mapped out; I’d lose the ugly wall lights and blue carpet and install pale bleached floorboards with a hint of warmth. In the dining area (above), I’d put a long buttoned upholstered banquette against the wall, and pair it with a long, narrow timber farmhouse table with walnut bentwood chairs to contrast with the pale floors. Above the banquette I’d have a wall of artwork.

This is a bit more provincial than what I had in mind but I do like the pairing of a bench seat with simple chairs:

I would have opened up the sides of the ugly 1980′s staircase so that it looked more like this:

I imagined a new lantern pendant in the stairwell, nicer handrails and a wall of large black and white photos - probably of the kids as only the boys’ bedrooms would have been upstairs:

The upstairs landing was big enough to house a long desk for homework, a small sofa and maybe a tv on the wall.

In the living room the overall scheme would be my city version of blue and white ‘Ralph Lauren style’. My plan was that this would leave me free to go with darker, richer colours and fabrics in my country place. Think sisal, white sofa and curtains, armchairs in navy with white piping, black mirrors against white walls, tan leather buttoned ottoman for a coffee table, bookshelves with a ladder to the ceiling on either side of the fireplace housing mainly books but some blue and white chinese ceramics too. I really did have a vision!

After a couple of weeks of indecision, we agreed to put in an offer, only to find that it had sold the day before! It was - I want to say disappointing - but it was more than that to me. I had become ridiculously emotionally invested, and in my mind it was already my new city pad, so refocusing on the property search was actually a little difficult. That is, until the next place came along.. (which I’ll tell you about tomorrow).

It’s nice to back, and thanks for reading.

Blues and pretty things

Over the weekend I spent a good portion of my down time looking at properties for sale on Domain and thinking about how I’d decorate them if they were mine. In an ideal world I’d have a few different houses in various locations that would suit the different colours and styles I love (country house, beach house, mountain chalet, modern city pad etc.) I do like to dream! I’m quite taken with the very dark blue (or is it black?) walls and door above for an entryway, especially mixed with the interesting shapes and collections in this Serena & Lily ad.

Again, it’s all about contrasting styles and shapes (and blues) in this room. The lack of symmetry in the furniture layout, the off-centre rug and the small central table shouldn’t work, but they do combine to make this room more relaxed and ‘young’. The fiddle leaf figs trees and pink flowers are the stars here though.

Relaxed, rustic, casual, textured: all perfect for my beach house (above)..

There’s a lot going on here (above), but it’s a fun space and I like the white and neutral base with the colours added through cushions.

The soft greys, blues and pinks here would be perfect for a reading corner in my country cottage, or perhaps a ladies’ guest room?

Have a great Monday!
