Feeling Beachy

You know those weatherboard houses I mentioned in my last post? I’ve been pondering them and am becoming a little obsessed with the idea of finding a little place with lots of timber-lined tongue and groove walls and also- and this would be critical - pitched ceilings! It wouldn’t have to be a ‘beach shack’; there are lots of houses with ‘cathedral ceilings’ (real estate agent speak) built in the 70′s that are heavy on the orange timber - I’d break out the white paint big time!

I just love this airy outdoor dining area with the big iron lantern.

Maybe it’s the hot weather we’re having at the moment here in Melbourne, but I’m really craving those pale sea and sand colours, lots of white-painted timber, open airy spaces and lots of greenery.

There’s a house around the corner from me that’s doing an upstairs extension and they’ve just installed a window upstairs very similar to this oval one - it looks great and makes me very curious to see inside..

This to me is the perfect relaxed kitchen, with stools around a table instead of an island with storage underneath, and the long open shelving.

I remember reading about this room in house beautiful mag (above), where they had used a rough raw silk to upholster the chesterfield sofas but then a leather on the seats - great idea! I also love the collection of inexpensive framed pictures lined up above the square doorways.

In this hot weather all I want to do is hibernate at home, but with school starting next week and my being away all next week, there’s a lot of last minute school shopping, labelling of a million books and items of school apparel and cleaning to do (whenever I have to go away I expect to return to the world’s messiest house under husband’s watch - but as long as everyone survives it’s ok. It’s nice to feel needed right?).

I’m back! and with blues for Spring

Hello! After what has been a lovely break from sitting at my computer (I can’t remember when I last blogged!) I’ve decided I should probably start doing some work again, and also start getting some of all the thoughts in my head down ‘onto paper’. We have had a lovely week at the beach, and as usual (I mean I feel like this every school holiday) I am reminded that there really is nothing better than just being with family, enjoying meals together, walks on the beach and little miracles like lost teeth and bedtime stories without the pressure of early starts the next morning. Holidays are Heaven! Of course being on holidays means that I’ve had some extra time to develop my plans for a house in the country, though that’s for another day…The sun in shining and it’s hard to escape the fact that Spring has arrived, and in that frame of mind I’m thinking of pale blues with lots of fresh white..

I’m obsessed with barn-like rooms at the moment! I don’t think I ever want to live under a flat ceiling ever again! Well, at least not a low one..And I love the big blue doors that look like they slide open to reveal another room (above).

This is the classic style that I can never get sick of (above). Soft white wall panelling, wide, raw-looking bare floorboards, big windows and shutters. Love the blue buttoned chair too!

Black and white photos all framed in black always look fabulous displayed together and give this room so much punch! (above)

French-style pieces with lots of white and blue= gorgeous! I love the mixture of sparkle paired with a shabby table and the industrial metal chairs.

Can you imagine having this window by your bed in your holiday home?

I love this bedroom (above). Those blue doors with the studded trim and the pale blue ikat chairs are gorgeous.

Carolyn’s new house Part 3

I mentioned I’ve been thinking about blues and purples a lot this week; well turquoise and greens have also been on my mind, as things progress on my friend Carolyn’s new house. You might remember I posted some inspiration for this project here and here. Well the plans have been approved and we’re just working on some final little tweaks before it all gets rolling. Little things like how wide doorways should be (and therefore how long walls will be to accommodate furniture), what sort of windows and doors to use, where we’ll need power points and lights, tiles and benchtops, and what sort of architraves and skirtings to use are all under serious scrutiny (or will be soon)! It’s great fun. Here are a few more ‘inspiration’ pics; none completely capture what I’m picturing but there are elements in each that might work:

A small-ish, open-plan living/dining/kitchen with a white sofa and some pops of colour, and a round dining table are all what I’m thinking. Love the big mirror in the dining area. Something like this only with a little more colour and a little less feminine..

This living room is a little less fun but more sophisticated, and I love the greens and golds and the flexible seating. The walls have a little more colour to them (it’s a bit cosier than the previous living room I think). Also, Carolyn loves classic architectural trimmings and chunky skirtings and architraves, so I want to use some timber mouldings to look like wainscot paneling in her entry way, then have all the cabinetry and doors tie in with it, similar to this room. Like this:

 


I like the dark timber floors against the white high skirtings in this bedroom, as well as the colours and the comfort factor: an armchair or ottoman/bed end stool is what I’m hoping we can include in the main bedroom.

The second bedroom will need to work as a guest bedroom but also probably as a library. I love this classic look and colour palette for a guest room (above).

Subway tiles for the kitchen are the preference!

But I’m also wondering about running a strip of the benchtop material along the back wall of the kitchen, where the stove is, with the tiles above. I like the look of this but it also helps with cleaning.

 

We’d like to be able to incorporate a freestanding bath in one of the bathrooms, and I want it to feel really luxurious and beautiful. I like the square-edged bath below against the classic wall paneling and quite feminine wallpaper and light.

 

And so, it continues!

A few amazing bathrooms

We’re a bit rushed here this morning, making cupcakes and preparing a picnic to take to a National Park for the day. (I feel a little guilty thinking of all the emails waiting in my inbox for me, so if you’re waiting to hear from me, I promise I’ll get back to you when the kids are back at school on Monday!) But I quickly wanted to share these gorgeous bathrooms that I’ve been dreaming about. All so different in style, and yet I’d love them all! The shower with the sun streaming in in particular is something I dream of.
