Oh, to have a collection of French opaline glassware like this! All those shades of blue - such a beautifully arranged collection. I’m not sure if this is Portieux Vallerysthal, true French Opaline or just a collection of blue opaque glass, and I don’t think it matters, do you? I have a few pieces, but nothing like this! Makes me want to hit the antique shops and get collecting!
Blue libraries
My three favourite colours all in one gorgeous room: grey, blue and purple. I am soo in love with the walls covered in framed pictures, too. I like that it’s not too matchy-matchy, that the sofa is painted white, but the chair is natural timber, and that there’s a hint of gold.
Where can I get a pair of those amazing tan leather and chrome chairs?
This is a great way to introduce blue at home, without going for the full ‘blue library’ effect: Paint your bookshelves blue to tie in with the fabric on an armchair. It looks cohesive but very casual and fresh.
I remember being fixated on this house (above) the month it appeared in Elle Decor magazine. The owner described (from memory) this room as being painted a ‘greyhound blue-grey’ which is exactly what it looks like! Again, love those colours - grey, blue, purple and this time, a pop of bright pink. I also love the fun rug - the owner dyed the rug herself using purple fabric dye. So fabulous!
Modern-style book heaven!
Hanging Art: Picture Walls
Yesterday’s post on Rita Konig’s apartment has got me thinking about picture / art walls. There is definitely an art to hanging art. Even arrangements that look unplanned are most successful when some thought has gone into the layout. The general rule that I work by when hanging a lot of differently-sized frames is to start with the biggest piece (but don’t necessarily hang it in the centre) and work outwards. You can work in a grid fashion with even spacing between each frame or a circular pattern for a more casual, accidental look.
My all-time favourite (above) that I use as a benchmark for my ‘etching wall’ at home. I hope one day it will look something like this! I love the mix of frames -black, gold, timber - but that all the art is colourless, just drawings and etchings. I love love it!
Rita Konig’s New York apartment
Remember Rita Konig’s apartment in Domino mag? I love the way she mismatches furniture and colours and has lots of pictures on the wall and books and photos on surfaces. To me it represented sort of a parallel life to mine and where I could be living if I weren’t a wife and mum in the suburbs! The style is so young and fun and so single-girl-living-in-the-city, and I never get sick of looking at it..
