My morning and some decorating bargains

I had to pop into Spotlight this morning to pick up some bits and pieces for client room installations next week, but actually saw a few bargain treasures that I wouldn’t mind for myself (as often happens, I must admit). If you have the patience to sift through lots of ugly vases, artificial (and artificial looking) flowers, floral bedspreads and acrylic rugs you can occasionally find something great (and cheap). Case in point, the blue and white trellis and geometric cushions (above). I was very tempted to buy some of these (especially the top one), and I think they were only around $30.

This combination of greens and white also caught my eye (after a bit of searching behind the lime greens!).

Or, for a more ‘country’ look, you could throw in a green toile and bring out the beige piping.

But at the end of the day I am a classics kind of girl, so these are some of the blue/white/neutral (boring? No! beautiful!) haul that I couldn’t resist for my house (above)..

They also sometimes have some nice fabrics..check out these red and blue geometric-printed hessians (above).

There was also this European-text cotton dhurrie rug (above), which could be pretty great in the right room.

Some more of the treasures I came away with (above) - they had all these goreous quilted pillowcases and euro cases reduced to $10 (usually something like $50) so I stocked up on white and taupe. And the glass vases and hurricanes were all half price! So I figured a few more to add to the collection couldn’t hurt..

After Spotlight I stopped at Freedom to look for candles for my new hurricanes (no luck, such a limited range!), and saw this extra-long rustic chest of drawers- might be perfect for the kitchen in my new country weekender I thought!!

Freedom seems to be trying to cater to the slightly industrial take on country style at the moment, and I quite liked this iron and glass pendant light.

This weekend between birthday parties I would like to try to get out of town to look at some properties - anyone know of a beautiful-but-rundown-ancient country house up for sale??

Have a great weekend x

A snippet of my week and a lovely bedroom

Phew! It’s been a busy couple of days, choosing external paint colours for a client’s house, moving furniture in and out and styling another property that’s about to be put on the market, and chasing up furniture, fabrics and wallpapers for various other projects. My client and I have also been finalising lighting, paint and other finishes (and thinking ahead of course to furniture!) for a major renovation project that I’m working on, which currently looks like this (it’s going to be amazing when it’s finished):

..and dragging around my sick 6 year-old through most of it. It’s been one of those weeks! Challenging, but still fun.

On another note, I’m loving this simple but gorgeous dark brown and white bedroom. The geometric carpet and pillows really shine against the whites and the dark walls. Love those lamps too!

My morning and decorating musings

I’ve been getting fabrics ready this morning to send to various workrooms, and also choosing fabrics for some up-coming projects. This blue and white geometric fabric is on its way to be made into two new drum lamp shades for a client’s amazing lamps (seriously, when she showed me I wanted to buy some, they are gorgeous!).

Also this morning I picked up these two stools. I’m so excited about what I have in store for these, they are really going to look amazing. I had a plan ready before I even picked them up, and it involves fresh white paint and some of this fabric:

La Fiorentina in wine/magenta to replace the current fabric:

You might remember when I found this big shade by the side of the road. It’s a great quality shade and in perfect condition, and I’ve been trying to figure out where I could hang it, and what to cover it in. I’m now thinking of either this fabric:

Which I’d pair with a wall colour like this:

and something, maybe a long bench, covered in this:

Can you picture it? Or, another idea is to cover the shade in this:

And paint the walls in this:

Then cover my bench in something like this:

Katana in Berry..decisions, decisions!

On another note, my seamstress and general vintage clothing lover sister is having a stall at The Way We Wear Vintage Fair in Williamstown this weekend. Apparently it will be full to bursting with all kinds of great fashion stalls and bargains (not just vintage but all kinds of treasures) so if you’re free come on down!

xx

Pattern in a bedroom

It’s true that there’s a lot to be said for a serene, pale bedroom with no colour or pattern, and there are some wonderful examples of these sorts of bedrooms around. But sometimes a bedroom cries out for colour - especially if it’s a dark room or a room with no architectural interest, or a child’s room. And often, colour and pattern in a bedroom are a way of simply making the room fun, beautiful and enjoyable to be in.

If you really like a colour, why not go to town in your bedroom - after all, it’s your most personal space. Like in this blue bedroom (above), a real mix of pattern and trim looks fantastic, even though there’s not a lot of variation in the shades of blue used. I love that link-style fabric on the headboard!

kit kemp - haymarket hotel

Kit Kemp is a master (or mistress!) of layering pattern (above and below in the Haymarket) over pattern and mixing patterns that most people would think don’t ‘go together’. But there are no rules! These bedrooms are sophisticated and co-ordinated but still look interesting and unique.

I think this is from House Beautiful (above). One bold pattern in a relaxing shade of blue is used on the walls, to cover the side tables and on the linens. The blocks of white keep it from looking over-the-top.

Pink and orange look great together (above and top of post). In terms of colour ‘temperatures’, it’s a ‘hot’ combination - but tempered with lots of pure white in both bedrooms, pink and orange rooms are fun and feminine. I like the lamp and the geometric bedspread above.

I love the layering of geometric fabrics in the bedrooms above and below. The colour palettes are limited to three colours to allow for a little more craziness with the mix of patterns.

This black, white and blue bedroom is an interesting play on shapes (above); a really curvy bedhead topped with a simple box pelmet, and lots of geometrics. I love the nickel side table (I have the same one at home- it’s my favourite because it’s easy to move around, wipe down and impervious to boys who think it’s really a drum!).

Don’t you love the hand-painted wall in this bedroom? I’d love to try this at home sometime! My favourite part of this room is the black and white tailored pelmet and drapes and the pop of blue in the lamp and morroccan pouffe.

Apologies for lack of credits for some of the above pics- I always try to credit my sources but some of these images have been saved for so long on my computer I have forgotten where they came from!
