Shopping for Windsors

I’ve been looking around at Windsor chairs for a current Hamptons-inspired redecoration project. There are a lot of beautiful antique Windsors around if you know where to look, and nothing beats the aged patina and authenticity of these beautiful old pieces. But there are also quite a few reproductions to be seen, some of which are beautifully handmade and some of which give you the general ‘Hamptons’ look, but which are perhaps missing the love and care in their production.

Not everybody cares about having pieces in their home with a history, but on this particular project the client and I agree we don’t want everything to be brand new. I love antiques and the idea of living with pieces that families before yours have also lived with and used. There is real magic in history if you ask me. The beauties in the top 4 photos above, a cabriole-leg Windsor and the wheelback dining chairs, are from all-press antiques here in Melbourne.

Have a great day,

Naomi xx

  1. Hi Naomi,

I like this story too, especially because my Windsors are featured in it, thank you.

BTW, I sold the cab leg Windsor the day after you posted. It went into the most beautiful bedroom along with a pair of late Georgian miniature chests as bedsides and an outstanding French walnut and fruitwood side table with names and hearts scratched into the well patinated top over the past two centuries… Beautiful. I’ll certainly be photographing that room once they’ve completed.

      Hi Jamie,
Sounds absolutely wonderful, I’d love to see the finished room. A shame we missed out on that chair, but you have so many beautiful others to choose from!

Wow – I have exactly the same chair (although mine is lacking the lustrous finish) :-) Makes me wonder what they’re charging for it! ;-)

Hi Naomi, I love these antique chairs but I bet they are expensive! Beautiful though. I do agree that it’s nice to have a couple of antiques in the home, and even better if they have some family meaning.

Hi Janette, I completely agree with you, family heirlooms can be precious because they hold that sentimental value. But if you don’t have any there’s nothing wrong with buying antiques and creating a new family heirloom :)

I so agree with you Naomi! I love antiques and think there should be one in every room. Can’t stand rooms where everything is bought brand new- no sense of history or of things coming together naturally. These chairs are absolutely wonderful.
