We are busy exploring some of country Victoria these holidays, and I have to say loving the wet and cold weather. The wet countryside is so beautiful and it’s not just the kids who are excited to explore new little towns as we drive through, and to search for the cosiest cafe to have lunch in. I love not having a fixed agenda and being able to let each day dictate itself. I don’t want the holidays to end!!
Anyway, yesterday we were driving out of a little town a couple of hours outside Melbourne when I saw this gorgeous little house on the side of the road, and I had to stop to take a closer look (and some pictures). I’m always looking for interesting ideas for building on a small block, and this one was a beauty: only 6m wide, the house took up the full width of the block and was only set back from the footpath by about one metre. Yet it had all the charm of a French Provincial chateau, complete with French doors, shutters, archways and wrought iron gates and balcony railings. I loved the driveway going up the side with a studio/guest room (I’m imagining here) up the back, and with the house extending over the top. Just when I think I have my heart set on buying/building a modern house next, I see a building like this and fall in love with this style all over again!

Love this little French style house! If I could build close to the city I’d build something like this. I do love that little side walkway/driveway leading to the doors at the back..(sigh)
Hi Deanne, yes I love the side drive/walkway too. Somehow it feels like a building from the South of France - and who wouldn’t want to live like that!?
I love the houses you see! This would be what I’d build if I could build from scratch - like a country home but on a small lot close to the city - those windows and the iron gate is divine. Thanks for sharing!!
