(Thanks for the emails alerting me to a problem viewing the pics in this post earlier! I think it’s fixed now!)
If you are a regular reader of this blog you will have picked up on the fact that I’m on the lookout for a new house. My little house is great for now but it’s dark and needs to be extended and renovated or possibly rebuilt. On top of that I have discovered I get a little bored in a house at around the 3-4 year mark, and start getting itchy feet to move on and find a new project. But also it’s just fun looking at houses!
So, on the weekend I went and looked at this ugly duckling:
It’s on a steep hillside and has amazing views. My dream is a modern house on a hillside with views. There’s something about having an outlook that to me makes a small house with a view preferable to a big house with no outlook. Anyway this house needs major updating but I loved the spaces and could picture exactly what I’d do to it. I love the square shape of it and I love all the stairs leading up to the front door! I had visions of turning it into a smaller version of this:
I have this dream of a white modern box on a hillside obviously!
But, I also love French-style homes and homes with character and lots of pretty greenery, so I wondered if I could turn the ugly duckling house into something that more closely resembles this house (Eric’s house from Entourage- have you seen it? I LOVE that house!):
I’d need to change the horizontal railing bars to some simple wrought iron ones (more kid-friendly anyway), put in some French doors and add lots of plants. I’d also change the garage doors to something like this:
It’s all a fun mental exercise that I like to play. Beautiful modern or beautiful classic? I can’t decide!

Hi again Naomi,
Kind regards, Angela Hutton. Room Service Interiors.
You know how we were talking about movies and the houses they contain that we love- well maybe you should watch ‘Ghost Writer’ - fabulous, modern house; this may help to clarify thinking were modern & contemporary is concerned. It is awesome. I too get confused and wonder if Confusion is normal & is it because you have seen a style done really well? Is it about wanting something you haven’t got too? I also wonder if it is to do with our over busy lives and a stream lined, contemporary house seems so simple & clutter free in comparison? Or a more traditional style in comparison to our lives seems somehow homey and comfortable? Good luck with sorting it all out
Hi Angela, I’m so glad I’m not alone! You seem to share a lot of my thoughts, it’s very comforting
It’s funny because sometimes after a day of looking at lots of colour and ‘stuff’ for homes I crave a modern box with polished concrete floors and all white! Then the next week I might fall in love with a period property in the country with yellow walls and chickens in the yard! I think no matter which way I go I’ll always have moment of longing for the other, crazy I know. Thanks so much for your thoughts, Naomi
If you know what you’d do on the inside.. match it to the outside! If you want a modern interior go modern on the outside for example. Personally I prefer the beautiful classic style myself, lots more character and can be more original.
