Latest finds on ebay

Posted in Latest Find

Just wanted to share with you my latest treasures from that wonderful bargain source: ebay. I drove for 3 hours this afternoon and trekked across the city and back again to pick them up, but it was worth it - I love my new finds! I plan to recover the chair myself - I love its shape and detail. I had originally planned to repaint the chinoiserie tables as I’m starting to accumulate a lot of black furniture (and was happy to discover the greek key pattern is carved not painted, so it would still be there even if I repainted them), but my Mum informs me that painting them would be sacrilege! And I think once I clean them up they will look gorgeous. Is painting over hand-painted things wrong? I’m not sure..

Anyway I’m determined that the chair will not be another project that waits years for attention - I want to get started tomorrow!

Latest bargain finds

Posted in Latest Find, Shopping

You know how you can search in vain online for a satisfying bargain buy and there’s nothing, then all of a sudden there’s a hundred things you love? Is it just me? Well I have had a bit of that lately. Even if I don’t actually buy anything, I really enjoy just looking and seeing what’s around and what things sell for (at least with online auctions).

This is what I have found over the past week or two:

I haven’t received this yet but I love it already! I mentioned in my last post that I have a habit of purging my home of things when I am in a particular decorating ‘mood’. Well I used to have some lovely french hessian cushions which I sold to a friend and on-line client of mine when I felt that I was ‘over’ french provincial (was I crazy!? A little bit). So this one is the replacement, though it looks a lot more rustic than the others I had. I’ll post a pic when it arrives..

Next I bought these chairs. They were ridiculously cheap on ebay ($100 for the pair) so I didn’t really think before I bought them. They are en route from Sydney as I write, so I haven’t met them yet either. You can see in the pics that the fabric is stained and will need to be replaced (another project for me!). I’m not sure what to do with these, maybe cover them in different fabrics and have one in my daughter’s room and one in the living room, or I may be able to use them in a project down the track…

Finally, I bought this fab octagonal mirror ($40). I love the shape and the large size (and the price). It’s currently bronze-framed but I am going to paint the frame white. I think the geometric shape will go nicely with these fabrics I have for the re-decoration of my sister’s apartment in Sydney:

That’s another exciting project in the works that I will be sure to post.

Well that’s my shopping for now but stay tuned for pics of these pieces in situ soon! And Happy New Year!

Christmas countdown shopping

Posted in fabrics, Shopping

What a week! The week leading up to Christmas is always busy with getting this organised, battling crowds at the shops, catching up with people before they go away and finishing off jobs before everything shuts down for the break. But I love this time of year, and with my 6 and 4 year olds counting down the days, it’s easy to get caught up in the fun. Excitement is contagious! But I can’t just think Santa and presents day after day and stay sane, so managed to get away by myself over the weekend to do some shopping (furniture and homewares, not food or toys!).

One of the shops I went to was Early Settler (I hate the name, and it’s so misleading given what they sell). Over the years I have found some good bargains there, though generally a lot of their stuff is too ‘country’ or too ‘fakey french provincial’ for me. But if you take a closer look there are some good pieces at good prices - especially if you wait until the end of season and buy floor stock. I could picture the striped armchair (above) in my daughter’s room.

They had these silver glass tealight holders at only $2 each! I couldn’t not buy some of them. I love having scented candles on the go all the time. The saleslady told me that a hairdresser customer had bought 3 boxes of them to give to clients for Christmas with a tealight inside - what a great idea!

I have been watching this armchair (in natural linen) for a year now, wondering whether I have a place for it, and now they have this dark grey linen version, and also a pale purple version. Isn’t it gorgeous!? There is an almost identical chair for sale at coco republic for more than twice the price - this one is $599.

I loved this delicate cut-out linen bedspread ($129).

I can picture this purple sofa in a teenage girl’s room, as part of a purple and grey or purple and brown colour scheme to keep it grown up. And for the boys:

I looved this union jack long bench. I would have loved to buy it and actually still thinking about it..I love the way it’s faded and coarse and old-looking.

They had these great hammered metal tray tables with a folding base. I can picture them as serving trays/coffee tables in an outdoor area- especially with some bright coloured fabrics and/or morroccan theme. Maybe paired with these:

Black and white, anyone? In a parallel life, if I had a different house, I’d have grabbed this suzani ottoman (above) in a heartbeat - isn’t it fabulous? Only $599 too.

Wouldn’t this round stone table look amazing in an entry way with a big pot of orchids on it? Or in a corner with a display of flowers, books and these:

Large plaster torchiers are $79 but smaller sizes are available, too.

I still love a bit of feminine french/shabby style and this chair fits the bill perfectly. I like the pale oak timber mixed with faded purple toile. I think at $599 it’s good value, as similar chairs sell for twice that price at other shops.

Finally, I saw this:

I can picture this metal cabinet in the bathroom to store towels up the top and toiletries down below.

Hope you are all enjoying your own count down to Christmas!

Some latest finds..

Posted in Latest Find, Shopping

I am soo addicted to shopping for bargains. My Dad once criticised me for being too acquisitive but I have come to realise that it’s not the accumulation of more ‘stuff’ for my home that appeals to me, it’s the thrill of finding something unexpected, and of seeing potential in something ordinary. Nothing gets my pulse going like the sight of a pile of old furniture by the side of the road at a garage sale or outside an antique shop! Anyway, I know I am not alone in this obsession, so I thought I’d share with you what I have found this week..

First, I found a end-of-line furniture and homewares shop where I picked up this great mirror with ‘antiqued’/foxed edges:

Which was in perfect conditon so went straight up:

At the same shop I also saw this cute round side table:

It’s solid iron and very heavy but has a mirrored top (which is chipped and needs to be replaced) which I think lightens it up a bit - visually at least! I took it straight from the car to the lawn and started spraying it white - so stay tuned for the ‘after’ pic!

But bargain shopping isn’t always easy- when you miss out on something one-off it can just about break your heart! You know that feeling when you spot something amazing in a junk shop but before you can get to it somebody else picks it up? Well I felt a bit like that when I spotted this gorgeous set of bamboo-look furniture for sale for only $100!!

The problem? It’s in Brisbane. I would snap it up in a heartbeat if I lived there!

Can you imagine this chair will a new seat pad covered in a gorgeous fabric?

Aahh! It drives me crazy! Someone in Brisbane give this table a good home! p.s.- it’s on ebay now!
