My kind of Hamptons style

Yesterday’s post had some themes similar to today’s gorgeous room. A Persian rug, some blue stripes, a little wicker and a little shine (which happens to come from the table lamp in both posts). This is pretty much the perfect room for me; classic without being stuffy, great architecture and lots and lots of books!

And how’s this for masculine?

I’m still on the lookout for stylish ideas for a masculine apartment, especially things that would work for a small space. Last night I came across this in my files (I forget what’s even in there!):

Isn’t it perfect? I love the black walls, the wall lights and the tan chesterfield sofa. Also the touches of silver and steel. The only thing I might change if this were a man-only pad is the chandelier, and replace it with something more modern or retro.

And on the subject of black walls, how amazing is Aerin Lauder’s black lacquered library?

And not just the black walls, but that lamp! And the photograph, and the carpet, even the rubbish bin under the desk…

Inspirational bookshelves

A person’s books say so much about who they are, don’t you think? I just don’t understand people who don’t have any books in their homes. When I was first married we were still students; we had no furniture, no dishes, no linen, but one thing we had plenty of was books! And since then we’ve maintained the philosophy that books are one thing you can never have too many of (although maybe that wasn’t wise as we now have a garage full of storage boxes filled with them). I remember in out first apartment my mum made us a bookshelf out of besser bricks and timber planks! I just love seeing how others display their books, and how they incorporate other treasures into the display - though I like treasures to be kept to a minimum and for the books to be the main attraction.

This is one of my favourites (above). Love the black shelves and how tall the are, the colours and the pop of pink in the modern painting, it’s amazing how that little detail transforms the space! And I luurve that sofa.

How gorgeous is this library (above)? Love all the pink and red on black shelves, and the shallow shelves so books can be displayed open.

I do like a little bit of colour-coding - the bulk of my books at home are organised (I use the term loosely!) by subject, but I do have my design books organised by colour. But I like things not to be too neat and tidy - the shelves above and below are good examples.

Saturday House of Inspiration - Dream Paris Apartment

If I lived in Paris it would be in a place a little (or a lot) like this:

This apartment has many elements that really appeal to me, the main one being the chic colour scheme of black, white and grey. I also love the classic styling and architecture, and the elements of contrast; the dark grey upholstery against a white-painted chair (above), the black-and-white scheme of the kitchen, and the bold striped curtains in the bedroom (see below).

What a fabulous combined dining room/library! The pistachio green upholstery of the sofa is really the only departure from the black/white/grey of the apartment. The colour and the modern lines of the sofa keep the room fresh, particularly against the backdrop of formally-arranged leather books. I love the shape of those dining table legs!

This is close to being my dream kitchen. Again, it’s the combination of modern and classic styling that makes it interesting for me. The light fitting and the sleek handle-less cabinets with integrated appliances represents the contemporary, while the look is softened by the white silk curtains and the classic black-and-white chequered tiled floor. I love the old-fashioned idea of having a table and chairs in the kitchen. To me it’s so much friendlier and nicer than sitting up at an island bench.

Do I even need to say it? Those broad-striped silk curtains against the classic-style grey toile wallpaper is gorgeous! I love the pairing with the charcoal sisal carpet and black pannelled wardrobe, too. When I grow up I want a bedroom like this! To me this is black/white/grey done to perfection.

Hope you are feeling inspired and enjoy the rest of your weekend!
