Architecture and Mood

I’m off to look at furniture for a client today but wanted to quickly show you this house I’ve been ogling - I love it.

Architecture and mood are the two things that stand out for me in this beautiful home. The architecture of the rooms - moulding details, bay windows, ornate ceiling, arched doorways - is my dream come true. When the building is this stunning, you don’t need to add a lot in terms of decoration. In fact, to go overboard with pattern or cushions (my weakness I admit), would be to detract from the beauty that’s inherent in the space.

The other thing that grabs me is the mood of the space. The palette of greys and greeny-blues, lack of pattern or bright colour, and the simplicity of the decoration to me is soothing, sophisticated and subtly masculine. What do you think of the chunky rope coffee table? It acts as a form of sculpture and adds texture- it’s great but I think I’d prefer a simple iron and timber brickmaker’s coffee table - but that’s just me! My favourite thing is the water painting - it’s so beautiful and echoes the lines of the sofa in front.

Love that tan leather Danish armchair!

Classic thistle wallpaper and simple grey upholstered chairs let the modern painting and light fixture do the talking! Have a great Friday! x

Saturday House of Inspiration - Dream Paris Apartment

If I lived in Paris it would be in a place a little (or a lot) like this:

This apartment has many elements that really appeal to me, the main one being the chic colour scheme of black, white and grey. I also love the classic styling and architecture, and the elements of contrast; the dark grey upholstery against a white-painted chair (above), the black-and-white scheme of the kitchen, and the bold striped curtains in the bedroom (see below).

What a fabulous combined dining room/library! The pistachio green upholstery of the sofa is really the only departure from the black/white/grey of the apartment. The colour and the modern lines of the sofa keep the room fresh, particularly against the backdrop of formally-arranged leather books. I love the shape of those dining table legs!

This is close to being my dream kitchen. Again, it’s the combination of modern and classic styling that makes it interesting for me. The light fitting and the sleek handle-less cabinets with integrated appliances represents the contemporary, while the look is softened by the white silk curtains and the classic black-and-white chequered tiled floor. I love the old-fashioned idea of having a table and chairs in the kitchen. To me it’s so much friendlier and nicer than sitting up at an island bench.

Do I even need to say it? Those broad-striped silk curtains against the classic-style grey toile wallpaper is gorgeous! I love the pairing with the charcoal sisal carpet and black pannelled wardrobe, too. When I grow up I want a bedroom like this! To me this is black/white/grey done to perfection.

Hope you are feeling inspired and enjoy the rest of your weekend!

Thinking of a Home Office

Today I have been thinking about what to do about improving my work area at home and creating a proper little office space. Oh to have a room of my own! I so get where Virginia Woolf was coming from.

But in the meantime I am fantasising about having the space to create my very own beautiful office like these ones by Ashley Goforth.

I love the dark walls and neutrals. The trellis-print curtains against the dark grey in the first study is gorgeous, and the rustic desk, antler light, pale cowskin rug, it’s all fabulous. And I love the upholstered desk in the second office with the nailhead trim!

I am contemplating claiming as my own a teeny room that was optimistically described by the agents when we bought our house as a 4th bedroom (haha!). I would have to seriously think about vertical storage, but I’m thinking it could look a little something like this:

Anyway I’ll keep you posted!

Feeling grey, grey, grey today

Verandah

Is it just me or does the end of a year always bring a little bit of melancholy with it? The calm after the mad rush of Christmas has me feeling grey today (not a bad thing - it’s my favourite colour after all!). Whilst a new year is exciting, I always feel that the years pass too quickly. I can hardly believe that tomorrow is the last day of 2010! But this has been a good year, with the birth of our third child, the pleasure of watching our others grow up, friendships new and old, the start of my blog and lots of decorating/renovation fun along the way. I have enjoyed a Christmas break (my break from blogging has been longer than I planned - thanks for bearing with me!) with my family and hope you all did the same! Here are just a few of my favourite grey rooms:

What a gorgeous subtle grey wall colour (above). Those fabric-over-wire light shades really make the space, along with the mis-matched chairs.

My dream butler’s pantry would be like this one (above) - grey cabinets, open shelving above with lots of white, glass and silver on display. Is that benchtop and splashback slate? One of my favourite surfaces! Or is it metal?

Not quite my decorating style (above), but I do like that dark grey shade on the walls - especially for a library. And the bold yellow and pink really pop against it. I don’t like the sloppy cushions though, I like more symmetry!

homes & gardens (UK)

I think I may have used this pic before (above) of this L.A. home, but it’s a favourite of mine - those shades of pale blue, grey and purple are so elegant and beautiful.

Another favourite designer of mine Steven Gambrel of S.R. Gambrel does classic so well (above).

Oh how I love this bedroom! Grey and pale pink is, in my book, one of the most beautiful colour combinations- along with grey and pale purple. And that wallpaper adds a necessary element of pattern - imagine the room with a plain grey paint behind the bed - it would be too much block colour. The curvy mirror and wallpaper are genius!
