Saturday House of Inspiration - Darryl Gordon

This week I have been revisiting my love of an apartment in Sydney designed by Darryl Gordon of Darryl Gordon Design. I have long admired his work but I remember this apartment in particular because it’s so beautiful but also because the issue of Australian Vogue Living in which it featured was in my doctor’s waiting room last year when I was pregnant. On every visit I would grab the same magazine and sit and drool over these pics.

Though he’s obviously not shy of colour, Darryl’s work has a classic edge to it which really appeals to me. I absolutely love the grey/blue chairs with nailhead trim paired with the classic Saarinen table:

For me he’s started with the ideal backdrop to furnishings: white walls and a dark-stained floor. Of course the star of the living room is Christopher Farr’s ‘Carnival’ fabric (used on the armchairs), which was made famous when featured in the Haymarket Hotel in London:

But for me it’s about the genius pairing of the Carnival fabric with the Summer Hill ‘Hollywood Squares’ cushions and the gorgeous Robyn Cosgrove rug. The black panelling to demarcate the dining area is also wonderful and clever - imagine the room with plain white walls there instead - it just wouldn’t be the same.

I have a whole bunch of clippings of Darryl’s other work, particularly of his own home, which I’ll have to post sometime as well. In the meantime, are you feeling inspired? I know I am! ‘Til next time..
