A white Farewell

First off, I have to apologise for my terrible lack of posts this week! I’ve actually been feeling quite inspired but just haven’t seemed to find the time to sit down and share it. It’s been a bit of a hectic week and on top of the usual work and end-of-term stuff, my big boy turned 7 yesterday. Amazing to think where those seven years have gone, and all the magic that has happened in between!

I have a client who mentioned that she wants to have a wall in her entry way covered in framed prints. Straight away I thought of something like this (above): a wall of framed black and white maps or topographical drawings, framed in classic frames above a console that can act as storage and also display, with a couple of chairs on either side. The symmetry of this sort of arrangement always appeals, and I do love a good print/art/photo-covered wall.

I’m really drawn at the moment to these barn-like extensions that house a combined kitchen/living/dining area. I love this one because of the concrete-clad walls around the fridge and because of all the white – white beams/ceilings as well as white floors and white furniture, with some timber thrown in. Can you imagine this being your holiday house? Heaven!

Finally, isn’t this such a neat use of a little bathroom corner? The curved ‘floating’ bench is unobtrusive and I love the little niche below for the towels! My favourite parts of this bathroom though are the floor tiles and the twin high windows, twin industrial pendants offset by the centred mirror.

I’m off today for the school holidays so I’m afraid there will be another slightly extended break in transmission! I’ll be back next week. Have a great weekend All, and where it applies, Happy Holidays!

Carolyn’s new house Part 3

I mentioned I’ve been thinking about blues and purples a lot this week; well turquoise and greens have also been on my mind, as things progress on my friend Carolyn’s new house. You might remember I posted some inspiration for this project here and here. Well the plans have been approved and we’re just working on some final little tweaks before it all gets rolling. Little things like how wide doorways should be (and therefore how long walls will be to accommodate furniture), what sort of windows and doors to use, where we’ll need power points and lights, tiles and benchtops, and what sort of architraves and skirtings to use are all under serious scrutiny (or will be soon)! It’s great fun. Here are a few more ‘inspiration’ pics; none completely capture what I’m picturing but there are elements in each that might work:

A small-ish, open-plan living/dining/kitchen with a white sofa and some pops of colour, and a round dining table are all what I’m thinking. Love the big mirror in the dining area. Something like this only with a little more colour and a little less feminine..

This living room is a little less fun but more sophisticated, and I love the greens and golds and the flexible seating. The walls have a little more colour to them (it’s a bit cosier than the previous living room I think). Also, Carolyn loves classic architectural trimmings and chunky skirtings and architraves, so I want to use some timber mouldings to look like wainscot paneling in her entry way, then have all the cabinetry and doors tie in with it, similar to this room. Like this:

I like the dark timber floors against the white high skirtings in this bedroom, as well as the colours and the comfort factor: an armchair or ottoman/bed end stool is what I’m hoping we can include in the main bedroom.

I just love the colours and the luxury of these bedroom sitting areas (above and below)!

The second bedroom will need to work as a guest bedroom but also probably as a library. I love this classic look and colour palette for a guest room (above).

Subway tiles for the kitchen are the preference!

But I’m also wondering about running a strip of the benchtop material along the back wall of the kitchen, where the stove is, with the tiles above. I like the look of this but it also helps with cleaning.

We’d like to be able to incorporate a freestanding bath in one of the bathrooms, and I want it to feel really luxurious and beautiful. I like the square-edged bath below against the classic wall paneling and quite feminine wallpaper and light.

And so, it continues!

What a lovely way to dine..

It’s a freezing winter morning here in Melbourne, and I know ‘cos we don’t have central heating! This dining room is so ‘me’; I’m always drawn to rooms that are essentially classic but with modern elements that take away any fussiness. Here, it’s the bare floorboards, the absence of cornices and the modern unframed artwork.

Did I mention that I’m planning to switch my rectangular dining table for a round one? I’ve toyed with this idea for awhile now (will a round table accommodate enough people? Or rather, will it still be big enough for me to use it as a place to sort the clean washing?). I saw a fabulous table on ebay but they wouldn’t sell it sans the 6 ugly matching chairs. So that hunt is still on!
