Warm rooms and high ceilings

You know my obsession with double-height rooms? I was doing a little research online looking for inspiration for if I could build a new house (yes, I am a busy woman but this was down-time at about 4:30 this morning), and looking at said tall rooms and saw this:

I really like that glimpse through to the hallway under the upstairs walkway, and the iron balcony overlooking the living room. I used to draw pictures of rooms like this when I was little – and I still love this neo-classical, luxurious style. And I LOVE that double-height room!

But it’s not just the architecture I’m drawn to; I’m a big fan of warm and cosy colours and comfortable rooms that envelop you. I like white walls in the right room but where you want a room to feel luxurious and ultra-comfy I prefer warmer shades like sands, tans, honeys and stone sort of colours.

Here’s another example:

I love all these warm tones with the rusts in the rug and also the fabrics; silk in the curtains and leather on the chairs. Add a little black and a little brass or gold and you’ve got a beautiful room that feels luxurious, grown-up and expensive!

Remember the house from the movie ‘It’s Complicated’?. It had that same warm and cosy feel but without the formality (above). The rusty reds add to the warm feeling.

Here’s another example (and another zebra rug!):

I really like how well taupes go with duck-egg blues.

But back to the double-height rooms, I realised when I looked through some of my photos that I seem to have a thing for tall stone fireplaces, too:

though I think it’s mainly the height thing that appeals to me. Here’s another favourite from Traditional Home:

The high ceilings and the connection between the two floors is definitely on my House Wish-List!

I’ll be away in Sydney all this week for the trade fairs and to check on a couple of projects so I’m not sure that I’ll be back until next week, hopefully full of new inspiration! So until then have a great week.

Living Rustic

I love the mix of materials in this kitchen (above); marble sinks, thick masonry walls, smooth painted cupboards, touches of stainless steel, wire chair back, rough brick floors and well-used timber bread boards. It all makes for a texturally rich, really interesting rustic country kitchen.

I think it’s the junk and antique-shop hunter in me that is drawn to shelves crammed with glassware and vessels filled with wooden spoons and silverware. I also love, love, LOVE that big old-fashioned sink, and the industrial steel shelving.

Such a simple stained pine staircase, and yet it looks great paired with crisp white walls. The modern black and white-framed photos and the ornate French chest provide the contrast needed here so that the simple staircase looks intentional.

What fabulous windows! This kitchen must be such a beautiful space to spend time in. And that sink looks really interesting – do you think it’s moulded concrete?

I think everyone loves an old building that has been modernised but where a feature has been made of the beautiful original materials. Here the timber beams and the stone wall are the rustic counterpoints to a luxurious limestone floor, stunning staircase and retro-style chandelier. It’s a great mix.

I want to live here!

The beauty of black

Posted in black, Uncategorized

I’ve just got this thing for black at the moment. Wrong time of year really for craving dark spaces, but I’d love to paint a room black. And I keep wanting to buy black pieces of furniture – a library, a velvet armchair, a buttoned ottoman – but I have to be careful in my sunlight-challenged rooms with my black/brown floorboards! I just love the impact of black and also its grown-up-ness, if you know what I mean..

In other news, I was heading home today and was stopped by a big red SALE banner outside a fave furniture store. Ten minutes later I was loading new dining chairs into the car (finally, we can eat at the table instead of the bench!). The slipcovers are linen instead of my desired white, but I figured I can have some more made – or does anyone know about the possibilities of bleach on linen??

Race Day

They say it’s the race that stops a nation, but it didn’t stop me this year. Too busy yesterday wielding a heat gun and a paint scraper to be interested in horse racing! So while everyone else was donning colourful dresses, hats and heels, I was pulling out my work clothes. Not glamorous I’m afraid, but at least we made a good start on operation Tiling the Front Porch. It’s so handy to have a public holiday just when you need a stretch of uninterrupted time to get a job done. Whenever I tackle a little DIY project like this I have a renewed respect for tradespeople – to do that every day!!

Anyway, it was a lovely long weekend here. I just love time at home together, and I do love cold, rainy weather. It never fails to put me in the mood for rooms like this:

And in other news, I think I may have finally found the perfect paisley for my living room curtains (this has been a long search)!

It also comes in aqua and red/pink. I’d so love to use the red! But it just wouldn’t work in my house, where I change things constantly..

Have a great Wednesday x
