A little shopping and florals

Today we have a pupil-free day at our school, so I took Mum and the kids to the local shopping centre for a rare treat (it’s actually a treat for me as I rarely brave the malls on weekends and never have all three children with me during the week). It was really nice to not be on a rushed shopping mission, and to be able to have a good look through the shops. At Target (our Target, unlike the one in the U.S., is usually bereft of great homewares) I was pleasantly surprised to see these side tables:

They had a great shape and a hexagonal top. These could actually look fantastic in the right room- I could picture the larger one as a bedside table for a kids room.

I’ve also had a chance to do some ebay shopping, and also a chance to get myself organised enough to list some of my ‘extra’ pieces of furniture, fabric and lamps.

I keep holding on to so many things for ‘the next house’, but sometimes I have to do a bit of a cull to make room for new pieces. Ebay is also a great source for pieces for clients- old chairs for recovering and the occasional antique in particular.

A couple of weeks ago I was showing fabrics to some clients for one of their rooms, one of which was this colourful floral:

We ended up going with another fabric, also in bright gorgeous colours, but I do like the green geometric against the floral upholstery here. This is a great example of what you can do with an old armchair bought on ebay!

And speaking of greens and florals, here are a few others that have caught my eye this week:

Again, we can see how great a subtle geometric pattern (here, the wallpaper) can look with a floral (the green toile pattern on the chairs). I like the freshness of this office area.

This is such a gorgeous feminine, French-style bedroom! I love the shape of the floral bedhead.

I like the simplicity of this scheme, with the use of just the one tropical leaf-patterned fabric. That banquette seating for the dining area is fantastic!

A peek at a before and after project

Today is one of those days where I’m stuck in my office catching up on paperwork, making phone calls and sitting at the computer – not getting out and seeing much to inspire me! So I thought I’d share a couple of photos a client sent me of the progress being made in her home. My clients recently moved into a beautiful modern house, with gorgeous sandstone walls and water views, but wanted to inject a little more colour and punch with the decor. We also wanted to work with their amazing Aboriginal art collection. Here’s a before shot of the ‘adult’ living space, which centred around a painting by Minnie Pwerle:

And here’s a couple of progress shots with the key pieces in place. Apparently the hot pink rug is a big hit!:

In the bedrooms my clients inherited these slightly strange and dated upholstered panels as feature walls, which were recovered with wallpaper to tie in with the other decor choices. Here’s an idea of the bedrooms before:

and after:

My client had the idea of turning what was formerly the dining room into a smart playroom (keeping the large wall aquarium). Here’s what it looked like before:

Again, we wanted to work around a painting, this time by Gloria Petyarre:

and then with the new rug:

The following isn’t the world’s greatest photo but I also wanted to show you a pic of the progress in my clients’ bathroom renovations. I love the wall of black and white Moroccan – inspired tiles in the shower!

Have a great Thursday! xx

A little of my week

Well school holidays start at the end of next week so this week and next are jam-packed full with installations and attempting to finalising projects. I’ve been keeping busy over the past few days hanging curtains, taking delivery of furniture and lamps, dropping fabrics off at workrooms and arranging lots and lots of cushions! This is the part I love most, of course, seeing the fabrics come together, styling rooms and seeing happy clients- so much fun!

In another lovely client’s house this wallpaper (above) is going up this weekend. I can’t wait to see how it looks and then to start moving everything else into the room!

On another note, my house-hunting obsession continues, but at the moment I can’t get away from the idea of buying a weekender house (or possibly even a permanent house one day..?) somewhere in country Victoria. Last night I dragged out my ‘inspiration’ files from 5+ years ago and it seems I am once again drawn to the things that inspired me back then. Funny how things come around in circle isn’t it? In particular I was really into traditional and cosy English-style country houses, like Stuart Rattle’s weekender in Victoria:

The house was featured in various magazines around that time and I have them all in a folder, just waiting to come out years later and inspire me! (I wish I had a good scanner so I could share all the pictures) The house is a restored former school house and it’s decorated in those classic English colours: rich red, cream for the kitchen, pale salmon pink for the entry hall and pale sagey green for the dining room. I posted a picture a couple of days ago that captured my country-home fantasies, and this house does the same thing. In fact I have folders of similar houses, mainly from English Homes & Gardens magazine from years ago, which I remember ogling for hours at the time..

And while I’m on the topic of English-inspired decorating, I saw this fabric yesterday:

I also saw this new paisley wool fabric which I fell in love with and which I am determined to use soon!

That’s my mid-week wrap up, hope you’re having a great week x

Colour confidence

I took delivery this morning of some gorgeous coloured lamps that arrived for two different clients, in aqua and jade green. I’m a big fan of coloured ceramic lamps and I love the extra little pop of colour that a lamp can bring to a room. That genius of colour confidence, Miles Redd, used yellow lamps to great effect in his home (above) – and the upholstered doors with a nailhead trim detail? Love it! I also love his mix of greens, blues, pinks and purples (below).

And what about chartreuse paired with turquoise (from Kelly Wearstler)? The colours are amazing but so is the chandelier, the black and white geometric floor and also the small scale – perfect for an unused corner of the kitchen!

Aqua with pops of orange: brilliant.

Another examples of opposing colours attracting! Blue and orange always work, and the mix of patterns is great here, too.

Happy Monday!
