Time-worn and beautiful

This is how the country home of my dreams would be: dark walls, loads of books, squishy, comfy sofas, walls covered in paintings, and rooms filled with antiques, pieces of nature and junk-shop finds.

Love this wall of simple botanicals – or are they pressed flowers? It reminds me of the wall of botanical prints at Sally Wheat’s house:

What could be better than this: an old stone wall, a battered leather chair, some books and a Louis Vuitton trunk?

A little shopping and florals

Today we have a pupil-free day at our school, so I took Mum and the kids to the local shopping centre for a rare treat (it’s actually a treat for me as I rarely brave the malls on weekends and never have all three children with me during the week). It was really nice to not be on a rushed shopping mission, and to be able to have a good look through the shops. At Target (our Target, unlike the one in the U.S., is usually bereft of great homewares) I was pleasantly surprised to see these side tables:

They had a great shape and a hexagonal top. These could actually look fantastic in the right room- I could picture the larger one as a bedside table for a kids room.

I’ve also had a chance to do some ebay shopping, and also a chance to get myself organised enough to list some of my ‘extra’ pieces of furniture, fabric and lamps.

I keep holding on to so many things for ‘the next house’, but sometimes I have to do a bit of a cull to make room for new pieces. Ebay is also a great source for pieces for clients- old chairs for recovering and the occasional antique in particular.

A couple of weeks ago I was showing fabrics to some clients for one of their rooms, one of which was this colourful floral:

We ended up going with another fabric, also in bright gorgeous colours, but I do like the green geometric against the floral upholstery here. This is a great example of what you can do with an old armchair bought on ebay!

And speaking of greens and florals, here are a few others that have caught my eye this week:

Again, we can see how great a subtle geometric pattern (here, the wallpaper) can look with a floral (the green toile pattern on the chairs). I like the freshness of this office area.

This is such a gorgeous feminine, French-style bedroom! I love the shape of the floral bedhead.

I like the simplicity of this scheme, with the use of just the one tropical leaf-patterned fabric. That banquette seating for the dining area is fantastic!

Living Rustic

I love the mix of materials in this kitchen (above); marble sinks, thick masonry walls, smooth painted cupboards, touches of stainless steel, wire chair back, rough brick floors and well-used timber bread boards. It all makes for a texturally rich, really interesting rustic country kitchen.

I think it’s the junk and antique-shop hunter in me that is drawn to shelves crammed with glassware and vessels filled with wooden spoons and silverware. I also love, love, LOVE that big old-fashioned sink, and the industrial steel shelving.

Such a simple stained pine staircase, and yet it looks great paired with crisp white walls. The modern black and white-framed photos and the ornate French chest provide the contrast needed here so that the simple staircase looks intentional.

What fabulous windows! This kitchen must be such a beautiful space to spend time in. And that sink looks really interesting – do you think it’s moulded concrete?

I think everyone loves an old building that has been modernised but where a feature has been made of the beautiful original materials. Here the timber beams and the stone wall are the rustic counterpoints to a luxurious limestone floor, stunning staircase and retro-style chandelier. It’s a great mix.

I want to live here!

My country house

How was your weekend? Sadly I didn’t get a chance to do any cottage-hunting, though I’ve been thinking about it (a lot). I’m keeping a close eye on the houses coming up for sale on realestate.com, but so far in the areas I’m thinking about there is nothing old for sale- and I can’t get away from the appeal of a little old cottage, hopefully with an old established garden to match. Sadly, there don’t seem be many run-down French stone or Hamptons-style villas in the areas just outside Melbourne! But of course, that doesn’t stop me from dreaming..

A cute little stone cottage like this one (above) would be a dream come true!

How I’d love to happen upon something like this, complete with glowing leafy forest and swimming pool.. and here’s the guest house, or maybe a very fancy potting shed:

I think I’ve posted this photo before (above), but I just love everything about it! Just love the look of climbers growing on the outside of buildings.

The floors would be stone or terracotta and there’d be no shortage of charm and character.

I would spend my weekends cooking, reading, pottering about and gardening, and creating tasteful arrangements of potted herbs in a sunny corner..

Here’s one version of my Dream kitchen- Hamptons-style joinery and polished nickel pendants, but some rustic elements too; old timber ladder, a timber-topped island bench, branches from the garden displayed in old jars..

The kitchen might open onto a little courtyard, where I’d grow espaliered fruit trees, loosely-clipped topiaries and lots of fragrant things in pots.

I just love the rustic brick arches of this outdoor room – too much for a little country cottage?

Inside, I just want one big living room with a pitched barn-like roof, with lots of books and comfortable chairs.

Maybe with an old spiral staircase leading to a mezzanine kids’ area.

But if all of this is too rustic for the rest of the family’s tastes, then I could happily suffer living in a slicker version of a French-country inspired barn conversion:

I just love the double height ceiling over the kitchen, the upstairs balcony ‘bridge’ overlooking, and the timber beams to create a ‘ceiling’ over the kitchen area (above).

Imagine the kitchen being where the bar is (above) – This is perfection! Love the moody feeling and the low lighting in particular.

And I love the colour scheme and mix of textures of this open-plan room…
