Loving Navy

It’s always been a favourite colour of mine, but lately I’ve been really loving and needing navy around me. Because in our living room I have to work with our large brown classic-style leather sofa, simple but strong navy and white combinations are a good fit. Think stud detailing and quite masculine. I loved that sofa when we bought it 9 years ago and I love it almost as much still. It’s just not as versatile as a white sofa! I do love this classic, slightly nautical look.

I had a whole bunch of navy/white/natural linen cushions made up just before Christmas in Ralph Lauren and Kravet fabrics, which help the brown leather sofa, linen dining chairs and curtains, white daybed, sisal rug and blue and white ceramics all tie together. The day bed at the moment is a veritable feast of blues!

I’m just loving a mix of navy and white fabrics with blue and white Chinese ceramics, some interesting antique pieces and lots of books and art. This room is my favourite at the moment:

It’s got that relaxed country house vibe while still feeling elegant, which I love. Here’s another favourite from UK Homes & Gardens mag from years ago (below). This is the sort of colour I want to paint our bedroom:

Here’s another moody navy room; love the pairing of navy with warm camel in the sofa and curtains and the navy trim. I like this sort of feeling for my country weekender!

And here’s my navy blue front door:

I love this eclectic mix of pieces and how great white, navy and wood tones look together:

I’ve posted it before, probably more than once (sorry), but here’s my favourite navy blue library by Nate Berkus – I think I can get away with posting it again as it’s a different shot to the one from Elle Decor..

I’m back! and with blues for Spring

Hello! After what has been a lovely break from sitting at my computer (I can’t remember when I last blogged!) I’ve decided I should probably start doing some work again, and also start getting some of all the thoughts in my head down ‘onto paper’. We have had a lovely week at the beach, and as usual (I mean I feel like this every school holiday) I am reminded that there really is nothing better than just being with family, enjoying meals together, walks on the beach and little miracles like lost teeth and bedtime stories without the pressure of early starts the next morning. Holidays are Heaven! Of course being on holidays means that I’ve had some extra time to develop my plans for a house in the country, though that’s for another day…The sun in shining and it’s hard to escape the fact that Spring has arrived, and in that frame of mind I’m thinking of pale blues with lots of fresh white..

I’m obsessed with barn-like rooms at the moment! I don’t think I ever want to live under a flat ceiling ever again! Well, at least not a low one..And I love the big blue doors that look like they slide open to reveal another room (above).

This is the classic style that I can never get sick of (above). Soft white wall panelling, wide, raw-looking bare floorboards, big windows and shutters. Love the blue buttoned chair too!

Black and white photos all framed in black always look fabulous displayed together and give this room so much punch! (above)

French-style pieces with lots of white and blue= gorgeous! I love the mixture of sparkle paired with a shabby table and the industrial metal chairs.

Can you imagine having this window by your bed in your holiday home?

I love this bedroom (above). Those blue doors with the studded trim and the pale blue ikat chairs are gorgeous.

Have a great Tuesday! x

Celerie Kemble in Elle Decor

Isn’t this house designed by Celerie Kemble featured in Elle Decor amazing? Quite traditional but with a few more modern touches, and lots of beautiful shades if blue. To me it just has that feeling of high-end decorating – no ebay bargains here!

Love a good salon arrangement of small artworks.

What an amazing piece of furniture (above)! Love the blue chinoiserie wallpaper and the Chinese celadon vases.

My favourite room in the house has got to be the lacquered powder-blue walk-in wardrobe. This is definitely one for my Dream House!

My ebay Theory

Like any good bargain-hunter and perpetual decorator, I love ebay. And I often get asked by ebay newbies how do you bid and know how much to spend? Well, forgive the rant to follow but here is my theory: I tend not to subscribe to the view that if you don’t ‘win’ something on ebay then it just wasn’t meant to be. I believe that if you don’t win it then you just didn’t bid high enough. My view is that people expect to get a bargain on ebay, so tend to be blinded by the true relative value of things in a normal market. For example, you might see a French chair on ebay starting at $300 and think ‘Tell ‘em they’re Dreaming! (sad-case The Castle reference I use often in my head and sometimes in public). But you might happily pay twice that for the same chair in an up-market French homewares shop, where you’re caught up in the thrill of all the beautiful stuff around you.

Here’s my approach to ebay: I know I really want something if I can picture it in my house and am mentally arranging a room to accommodate it, and if I see it as mine already, before I’ve even bid. When I get that feeling I think of the number that would be the maximum of what I’d happily spend, then add another, say, 20%. If I don’t ‘win’ it after that, I can console myself that it has gone for far more than I can afford to spend.

If I don’t get ‘that feeling’ of having to have something, this is my test: if I saw it in an op-shop or at a market, what would I be prepared to spend? I have often paid more for something in an op-shop than for something similar on ebay, and I believe it’s because we all expect ebay sellers to be desperate to sell and for the prices to be low. From the point of view of a (-n occasional) seller, this can be frustrating. From a bidder’s perspective, if you concur with the low-price rule then it can be downright infuriating when others demur and push the price up.

Well, I’m afraid I fell foul of my own rules this evening, when I missed out on a fabulous French sofa, perfect for the turquoise-fabric-with-long-sofa-cushion-immitation I aspired to in Saturday’s post. A lovely reader had sent me a link to a perfect sofa candidate on ebay, and I was all geared up to pick it up this week. But when the moment of truth came, my measly bid fell short. The worst bit? I’ve seen the same sofa for sale before for half what it went for tonight, and it didn’t sell. I’m sure there is a lesson in here for me somewhere..
