I’ve just got this thing for black at the moment. Wrong time of year really for craving dark spaces, but I’d love to paint a room black. And I keep wanting to buy black pieces of furniture – a library, a velvet armchair, a buttoned ottoman – but I have to be careful in my sunlight-challenged rooms with my black/brown floorboards! I just love the impact of black and also its grown-up-ness, if you know what I mean..
In other news, I was heading home today and was stopped by a big red SALE banner outside a fave furniture store. Ten minutes later I was loading new dining chairs into the car (finally, we can eat at the table instead of the bench!). The slipcovers are linen instead of my desired white, but I figured I can have some more made – or does anyone know about the possibilities of bleach on linen??

Don’t you just love those big sale signs? By the way bleach is very harsh. You may lighten them but you would also destroy the quality of the fabric. They may rot and their lifespan would be some what less. Linen prob a better colour with small children in my opinion. Lucky girl. Lynne.
Hi Lynne, I am a sucker for those SALE signs! They definitely designed them with weak shoppers like me in mind:) I’ve had a lot of great advice re: the bleach and it’s all been along the lines of what you’ve said too. So, no bleaching. I’m actually loving the linen covers now, though I’ll probably have some white ones made too. Thanks for the advice!
Hi Naomi, Love the black and god on you for buying the dining chairs. Just take care when bleaching any fabric that you don’t dry it in direct sunlight. If you do you will end up with nasty yellowy brown stains on your fabrics that don’t come out!…same with any bed linens etc. Kind regards, Angela.
Hi Angela, thanks for the advice! I’ve been given a number of tips after posting that idea and I think I’m not going to risk the bleaching – I’ve decided to leave the linen natural and have a couple of white slip-covered carvers at either end of the table to add a bit of crisp white (so much beige/natural linen in my house!). But I really appreciate all the advice I can get, so thanks xNaomi
I want to see the chairs!
I am definitely a black fan which is why I need to decorate in colour. Without colour our home looks a little bachelor pad-ish. I love that only one of these photos is missing flowers. It’s amazing what a difference a vase of flowers, or a plant (or even a bowl of fruit) can make to a room. 
Hi Nadina, I completely agree! Flowers and plants work amazing wonders. I’m also finding I’m wanting to buy everything in black lately- very bachelor pad-ish but I do often find colour with black more deep and interesting than colour on a plain white background. I will have to do a post soon on my dining room and my new chairs! x
Hi Naomi, a word of warning: don’t try it! I bleached a navy sofa cover white and it came up all patchy and uneven and just dirty-looking. Stick to the linen is my advice. Love the pics of black too
Hi Sandy, Thanks, that seems to be the general consensus! I really did have faith in the powers of bleach, and imagined snowy white covers would be the result. Thanks for the advice. x
I’ve been thinking about painting my kitchen black and your black kitchen is great inspiration- all great pics cheers
