Dream rooms in greys and neutrals

Isn’t this a fabulous room (above)? The beamed ceiling, the fireplace, the big iron windows and those lanterns…I really like the simple furnishings in linen, leather, timber, iron and sisal too.

My sister and her boyfriend are moving into a new apartment soon and want to paint the entry hall in black and white stripes- I think this is a great example of how to make it work in a small space. The stripes, big mirror and bench really define that small entry area and make the most of the space. I love the white floors and I really love the limited palette of grey and neutrals.

I adore this dark grey boy’s bedroom- no pattern, just lots of shades of grey and browns with brass and gold accents.

A dining area is the perfect place to use darker, moodier colours. What I like about this dining room is all the different seating.

Again, I’m loving the brass and gold finishes against the dark grey. Curtains, a dressing table and a chandelier in the bathroom are such luxuries! You’d need great ventilation though.

Pales and greys

I’m trying to slowly sift through all the pics on my desktop and came across some gorgeous grey rooms that I haven’t looked at in awhile. Greys, light or dark, are so soothing and to me create the perfect backdrop to any colour. Isn’t the top bedroom with just a hint of dusky pink divine? And that hallway with the sisal carpet and leopard runner and interesting door mouldings is definitely on my Dream Home list!

Just having a quiet day at home with the kids today, catching up on folding washing, emails and paperwork, and playing dollhouses. All important and good fun.

Grey and Green

I have a couple of green velvet armchairs that every now and then I think about having recovered. Then I always change my mind as I have a renewed appreciation of the virtues of green! And these pics are great examples – green and grey is such a sophisticated combination. Green walls with grey upholstery (top) and grey walls with green upholstery (middle pic) looks fabulous. And I love the combination of green, dark timbers, a hint of nickel and some subtle grey lampshades (above).

Today I’ve been hunting for rugs for two different clients, looking at lanterns for above a kitchen island and putting together fabrics for cushions. Everywhere I go I’ve been checking out the gorgeous Christmas window displays that are appearing in homeware shops  – I’m such a Christmas person and seeing windows full of twinkling lights and interesting wreaths and new cushions always gets me so excited! I’m collecting lots of beautiful ribbons and papers for all my wrapping. I think the packaging is so important don’t you?

Why grey is the best colour

Have you been watching The Block? One of my favourite things in terms of the decorating is Josh and Jenna’s grey-wall theme running through their house. I love grey walls. They look so sophisticated paired with more grey and ivory, but if you want colour you can add green or pink or lilac or orange (yes, just about anything!), and that will work too. It puts me in mind of one of my favourite grey bedrooms:

I love the darker grey silk curtains and the muted grey rug. And that bed is pretty special, too.

Who doesn’t love Hamptons-inspired decorating (above)? What does it for me here is the scale of the pieces: big, chunky grey console topped with giant glass lamps and big pieces of coral. My house used to be completely ‘Hamptons’ style with a bit of French provincial thrown in, but I’ve moved on to a lot of colour  and a sort of crazy fusion of Hollywood Regency and Chinoiserie. This pic makes me want to go back!

To me this dark grey is a little more masculine. Love how it works with the gold touches, the mirror and that great chandelier – so glam!
